Fairness in a Data Center

چکیده
Fairness in a data center by Mikkel Hagen University of New Hampshire, December, 2012 Existing data centers utilize several networking technologies in order to handle the performance requirements of different workloads. Maintaining diverse networking technologies increases complexity and is not cost effective. This results in the current trend to converge all traffic into a single networking fabric. Ethernet is both cost-effective and ubiquitous, and as such it has been chosen as the technology of choice for the converged fabric. However, traditional Ethernet does not satisfy the needs of all traffic workloads, for the most part, due to its lossy nature and, therefore, has to be enhanced to allow for full convergence. The resulting technology, Data Center Bridging (DCB), is a new set of standards defined by the IEEE to make Ethernet lossless even in the presence of congestion. As with any new networking technology, it is critical to analyze how the different protocols within DCB interact with each other as well as how each protocol interacts with existing technologies in other layers of the protocol stack. This dissertation presents two novel schemes that address critical issues in DCB networks: fairness with respect to packet lengths and fairness with respect to flow control and bandwidth utilization. The Deficit Round Robin with Adaptive Weight Control (DRRAWC) algorithm actively monitors the incoming streams and adjusts the scheduling weights of the outbound port. The algorithm was implemented on a real DCB switch and shown to increase fairness for traffic consisting of mixed-length packets. Targeted Priority-based Flow Control (TPFC) provides a hop-by-hop flow control mechanism that restricts the flow of aggressor streams while allowing victim streams to continue unimpeded. Two variants

Fairness Improvement of Multiple-Bottleneck Flow in Data Center Networks
Quantized Congestion Notification (QCN), discussed in IEEE 802.1Qau, is one of the promising layer 2 congestion control methods for data center networks. Data center network fundamentally has symmetric structure and links are designed to have high link utilizations. So, data center flows probably pass through multiple bottleneck links. QCN reduces its transmission rate with each congestion noti...

In many societies fairness and equality are the most significant concepts among the governments and peoples. In the health systems, the fast increase in expenses takes expert’s attention to measure and control the inequality. The aim of this paper is to investigate the inequality of household’s health expense’s in the Iran and making its statistical map. The health expenses data for doing t...
متن کاملEnhanced Cluster Computing Performance Through Proportional Fairness
The performance of cluster computing depends on how concurrent jobs share multiple data center resource types like CPU, RAM and disk storage. Recent research has discussed efficiency and fairness requirements and identified a number of desirable scheduling objectives including so-called dominant resource fairness (DRF). We argue here that proportional fairness (PF), long recognized as a desirab...

متن کاملAMP: A Better Multipath TCP for Data Center Networks
In recent years several multipath data transport mechanisms, such as MPTCP and XMP, have been introduced to effectively exploit the path diversity of data center networks (DCNs). However, these multipath schemes have not been widely deployed in DCNs. We argue that two key factors among others impeded their adoption: TCP incast and minimum window syndrome. First, these mechanisms are ill-suited ...
